Remember the 80’s?

I LOVED the 80’s.  I loved the music.  Some of the clothes.  The carefree days.  I found an old picture circa 1982 or 1983.  I don’t have the exact date but it was during my freshman year at UCLA and I recognize the people in the photo as my dorm neighbors.  What was happening then?  I recall MTV had just surfaced–maybe not until 1983 but I do recall the one of the first music videos I ever saw was Squeeze singing “Black Coffee In Bed”.  I remember my baseball team won the World Series that year (OH YEAH) and I blew off studying to watch my Cardinals kick the Brewers and win.   I remember hearing the band X for the first time and seeing them play on campus and getting my feet trampled by a mosh pit of army boots.  I remember taking the long walk from Hedrick Hall all the way down to Bruin Walk to get to my classes–no wonder I looked so thin then.  I remember feeling uncomfortable with all the sorority and fraternity folks and all the material people that plagued the surrounding Westwood area and feeling out of place most of the time.  Part of the reason I transferred after my freshman year was the huge lost feeling I felt going to classes with 35,000 other students dressed in preppy clothes with topsider shoes and alligator shirts.  UGH.  Don’t get me wrong, it’s a fine campus if you enjoy all that.  I had enough fun and met some nice people–in fact I still keep in touch with one of my old boyfriends from there but I look at this photo and remember what an awkward, silly time a person of 18/19 goes through.  First of all, I do recall the names of the two people sitting on the bench.   The girl I think was named Vanessa and that’s about all I can remember except she lived on my floor.  The boy in between was named Greg.  I even remember his last name.  Greg lived down the hall from me about 3 or 4 rooms and had not one but two roommates.  Considering our dorm rooms were made for only two occupants, you get the picture.  One of the roomies was a funny guy named Kevin that secretly lived in Greg’s room with his roomie.  Kevin attended all the dorm functions though.  Greg I remember well because we loved the same music.  We quoted musicians talking from “The Decline of Western Civilization” and went to my first X concert together.  See his preppy checked shirt?  I don’t think he was a frat boy, but he played one on television.  In the backround I can see the floral shirt of my next door neighbor Ken.  He and his roomie Steve ALSO had an additional roomie crashing with them all the time.  Then there’s the Princess trying to hide herself from the picture.  She was a really pretty girl, obviously had self esteem issues and didn’t like having her photograph taken.

Then there’s the brunette next to Greg.  OMG can we pluck our eyebrows any thinner?  Unfortunately this poor girl didn’t know about eyebrow waxing or she would have done much better than trying to take it into her own hands.  The shoes… not topsiders this time, but from the white barely showing in the picture, she was wearing K-Swiss.  K-Swiss was the rage in the early 80’s in Southern California.  I don’t know about your neck of the woods, but those shoes were on every foot.  K-Swiss, topsiders and Mia flats.  Red Mia flats to go with those tapered jeans that girls of the 80’s wore while listening to Adam Ant play on KROQ.  Look at this girl’s tan.  Wow, she looks like she might have spent some time out in the sun that summer working on it.  Probably used baby oil or SP2 if anything cause who knew about skin cancer in those days?

Wait…this girl has a camera.  She liked photography even back in her college days…wait…could this photographer be me?   Ummmm yeah….I admit it.  How brave of me to not only admit what year I started college (do the math) but how brave of me to post such a horrific example of how scary the 80’s must have been and how I can hear my children howling with laughter at that eyebrow thin goofy face with the plaid preppy shorts and K-Swiss shoes.  Hmmm. What’s the purpose of this pointless post?  I guess I had a camera in my hand a lot in my young life and found a photo I thought would amuse you.  At least it’s not my prom picture.  That would really make one spit out their Diet Pepsi all over the keyboard.

Pottery Barn Kids Shoot-Pleasanton Children’s Photographer Pam Biasotti

Dogs, kids, dogs, kids–I can’t make up my mind!  Late September I photographed a lot of children at Pottery Barn Kids in Pleasanton.  I promised some of the parents I would post a few on my blog.  Normally you will find me shooting on location with my clients in either their home or favorite outdoor spot, so using studio lighting was a fun change of scenery for me.  Too bad no one thought of bringing their dogs into the store to add to the shoot!  Now THAT would have been a blast!

Sleepless in Seattle

I am definitely catching up on my rain consumption here.  It’s been quite a while since the Bay Area has had rain, so walking through the streets of Seattle has been interesting– can you say wet?  I am on business and won’t be returning to my office until Tuesday to respond to calls and emails.  I did, however get tagged from my dear Floridian buddy Terrilyn and thought I would play along.

The Rules

   1. Post the rules on your blog.

   2. Write 7 random things about yourself.

   3. Tag 7 people at the end of your post.

   4. Pass on the tag.

1.  I am a fussy eater.  I don’t like eggs or most dairy  and get very upset if there is a hint of mayonnaise on anything.  I have been known to send back food if they don’t respect my wishes to hold the mayo, hold the sour cream, hold the cheese, etc.
2. Although I haven’t lived in St. Louis since 1978 I will always be a Cardinals fan.
3. When I was little my older sister was babysitting me and was tired of hearing me talk and put masking tape over my mouth to quiet me.  I was too afraid to take it off and walked around the house with tape on my mouth.
4. I love to play practical jokes.  Laughter is  the way to live your life.
5.  I didn’t get my first dog until I was 29.
6.  If I could live anywhere it would be Santa Barbara.
7.  I wear a Celtic toe ring.
Okay, so who should I tag back?  How about Marci, Sherri, Erika, Susan,Leslie, Jill, and Sylvia.

Newborn Twins Photographer-Pam Biasotti-Palo Alto

Today I traveled to Palo Alto to photograph twin boys. They were born very early but looked amazing for 9 week old twins. Mom and Dad were up for anything and I told Dad he could be my assistant anytime for positioning and folding newborns. He knew exactly what to do and made my job easier. They are terrific first time parents and just knew how to soothe and respond to their sons. Here are some sneak peaks

He’s sort of waving at me. Can you see it? Blurry hand!

Dad held both of the boys with ease.

I think from this look here Mom and Dad are telling me it’s time to let them rest!

I am velcro

According to this pup. His name is Spuddy and was the MOST cuddly Golden ever. Come to find out my Riley is somehow related to him in the ancestor tree. Most excellent. I spent part of yesterday hanging out with lots of Golden Retrievers in Lafayette. The photo was captured by another photographer, Steve Southard. You can check him out here.

I was tempted to make myself look glamorous, but you shouldn’t doctor someone else’s work EVER.  I wasn’t wearing any makeup, my face was full of dog saliva and my hair was definitely bed head style.

Steve and his wife Terry also breed Goldens and you can find out more about them here.

People that make you smile

It’s all about the humor. Rule number one in the Pam Biasotti book of requirements for friendship: MUST HAVE A HUGE SENSE OF HUMOR! Last February I spent a weekend in San Diego at the Secret Photography Workshop as a staff member and met some really cool people. Ashley McNamara was one of the funniest new friends I made that weekend. We had a lot in common–she hails from the Bay Area originally and knew exactly where I was from and understood the lingo. We text messaged each other on our beloved iphones. We took pictures of others and ourselves with lots of makeup and teased hair while we experimented with off camera flash in a swanky room at the W.

I love Ashley’s photography–she has a style that’s all her own. This is a capture of her Flickr images that says it all about her. She is a genius who knows how to execute the image! She has this set on her Flickr stream that says “Failed attempt at 365″ which I wish she would just start doing again. She makes me want to do one for myself and I HATE having my photograph taken. (That’s why it’s important to have someone you trust who can do the job well. I was pleased with the outcome.)

So when I knew she was visiting from San Diego a few weeks back she did me the ultimate favor by taking some images of Riley and me for my new dog website that I am working on. I was thrilled–check these out! My portrait session by Ashley McNamara

Which image of Riley and me do you like the best? My favorite is the one blowing in Riley’s ear. Hee hee! I can’t help but wonder if I need me some botox….

San Ramon Child Photographer-Pam Biasotti

J and her dad performed in a father/daughter dance that was in Livermore last week at the Bankhead theater. I actually was invited by J’s mom to watch the recital and it was so much fun since I don’t have girls of my own and sometimes I need to remind myself that testosterone invades my home. I have no one to share my Barbies with, no one to shop with, no one to do girly things with. So, yes, it was a sweet scene to see all sorts of little girls dancing and wearing their cute costumes.

The final dance was the father/daughter number and I don’t think there was a dry eye in the house.

Channeling my inner Larry David

I can’t decide if I am Larry David or if the man next to me today was Larry David. Either way I felt I saw him passing by me in a frantic moment of anger and humility as I committed the big no no while working out at my health club this morning. Sure there are signs that say no cell phone use. Ya. Whatever. I had my earphones on. Plugged into my iphone. My iphone is not only a cell phone. It’s an ipod, internet browser, email checker, map finder, note taker, meat cutter, finger print kit, cholesterol measurer, ovulation kit, medicine dispenser, candy machine, beer tap—OKAY YOU GET MY POINT. It does many things. It’s not just for being a phone ho.

So yes, I ADMIT I was speaking to another person on the phone while I was working out. I have to multi-task my busy life–even if it means breaking a rule at the health club. Doesn’t mean I would talk on my cell phone in the movie theater or in a restaurant. I do possess some minor etiquette traits. But a health club? Where machines are whirring and making lots of noise? Where a woman on my other side is talking loudly to her friend next to her while she is working out? What’s the difference?
As I was getting off my phone the man on my right gets off his machine and tells me I should be talking outside on my phone and blah blah blah which means as soon as I saw the finger wagging and his condescending voice lecturing me he became Charlie Brown’s teacher and I didn’t hear another word. I smiled and nodded as he walked away and out of nowhere I heard myself say something on the sarcastic side. I guess I was naughty this morning. I should have told him I was a paranoid schitzophrenic talking to myself.

For all I know, he might be the owner. He wasn’t wearing a uniform or anything. No soup for me!

Below, is kind of a funny clip from my favorite show Curb Your Enthusiasm. I had such a Larry David morning. Except I wasn’t Larry David. I was the bluetooth fella I guess. Too bad the man next to me didn’t do what Larry did.

Warning: Language is on this clip. Not advised for young children to hear this.

Working on a new website.

Update. I apologize for my missing website. Unfortunately it was destroyed by forces beyond my control–my web host is kindly giving me a new site to be constructed which I am working on at the moment. Your slideshows, photo galleries and shopping cart are not affected and you should still be able to reach them. If you need to reach me please contact me by calling 925-556-1529 or email me at info@pambiasotti.com.

Sometimes things happen and we just have to make do with what we have and move forward. Riley probably has some thoughts on this whole fiasco, but he’s too busy on the floor next to me dreaming.

Tomorrow I am assisting another local photographer second shoot a wedding in Napa. I have assisted for weddings before but I don’t like to broadcast that I shoot weddings…I like the second shooter aspect. She’s a very talented photographer and colleague. I look forward to working with her.

Have a fabulous end of the month weekend.  Sex and the City is out and I can’t see it until my good friend Amy returns from her trip to Virginia.  I promised her we’d see it together.  I have been waiting 4 years for this!!!

I apologize

To my clients for not being able to access my blog, website or shopping cart all day. My hosting company’s servers were down due to a power outage in Florida where they reside and apparently their UPS didn’t do its job. Supposedly they have failover but something made 40% of their servers fail. Not good. Coming from a networking background I recall an occasion or two where the power would fail in a server room and the failover didn’t work–still not a good thing. Very frustrating. Things seem to be back up and running, knock on wood.  Apparently the slideshow feature is still down. I am looking into that.

My parents are visiting from Southern California, so the hot tub awaits us–have a happy three day weekend.
