My mistress Pam has been neglecting me lately. I know I told you that I would be posting more dog thoughts and yet Pam hasn’t allowed me to touch her computer lately because she’s so busy working all the time on it. Sometimes she is helping this person install blogs. Other times she is editing her portrait sessions for children and dogs. She totally missed wishing me a happy birthday last month! August 31 I turned 9 years old. I don’t recall any big fuss made over my birthday–maybe Pam let me sleep a little later than usual and not feeding me right away that morning. There was no birthday cake or party hats. Just the typical love and pats on the head. I think she might have gotten me a dog toy or something, but honestly when one of those toys are placed in front of me I devour it in a matter of seconds.
9 years. I remember when I came home to live here. I was around 8 weeks of age and kind of scared. I was placed in the kitchen which had some kind of baby gates going across each end. Pam was standing at the sink, doing the dinner dishes and I walked up to her and lay on her feet while she cleaned the sink. My instinct told me she was going to be my mistress and alpha. There was another Golden already living there. His name was Paddy and he seemed indifferent that I was there. He seemed miserable because he had hip dysplasia. Being an obnoxious puppy, all I wanted to do was wrestle with him and play.
So, Pam, it’s okay that you didn’t acknowledge me on my birthday. I understand you have other things on your mind like customer service to your clients and booking your holiday mini sessions. It’s okay. I know you love me more than anything and it’s just a treat to be your dog. Thank you for letting me jump up on your bed in my old age. Thank you for walking me every day to school to drop off your son. Thank you for all those extra carrots and apple slices. Oh and I am sorry about the other night when your teenager left his Hot Pocket sandwich on the table while taking out the trash. I admit to opening the screen door with my nose and letting myself in to snatch it off the table. I guess that was my belated birthday present.

Hey grandson!
I can’t believe your Mom forgot your birthday. I can remember the day you were born very well. It was my first solo litter and Rikki’s only litter. I was in school getting ready for the start of the new year when I got a call from your Great Grandma, letting me know that the first puppy had been born. I rushed home just in time for you to be born. You and your brothers were so much of a handful but I knew that you’d all grow up to be fine gentle Goldens just like your Dad. They are both very proud of you and your brothers. And your modeling career is still going well– handsome as ever. Happy woof-day and many hugs!
